A young Japanese woman was running through Tokyo station screaming “Save me! Save me!” There was a Japanese man chasing her and closing in. He grabbed her wrist and caught her about 10 feet in front of me. The woman was still yelling “Save me! Save Me!” but the Japanese people in the crowded station ignored her, not wanting to get involved. This is the beginning of just one of the stories from my experience living in Japan in the 1980’s, where I had moved right after graduating university. It was still rare to see an American who could speak Japanese fluently. This book guides the reader though my many adventures navigating through Japanese culture while living in the outskirts of Tokyo, as well as Tokyo proper.

At this time of writing, The Audiobook No Pianos, Pets or Foreigners!: My Life in Japan in the 80's. has garnered 10 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Audiobook is Good TO READ!

From 1999 to 2010 I was in Japan three times per year for about three weeks each time. My daughter lived in Tokyo for a full year during college and then worked for the JET Program for two years in the northwestern part of Tohoku. We traveled everywhere in the four main islands and they were wonderful years because I spent those trips with my daughter and enjoyed almost every moment of being in Japan.I have read every book I can find about westerners living in Japan. There are lots of them. A few are terrible, most are okay, and a very few are exceptionally entertaining and/or excellent reads. No Pianos, Pets, or Foreigners is one of the better ones. I admire Jo Palermo's sensitivity toward the Japanese people, his hard work learning Japanese (my daughter did the same), his sense of humor and his "roll with the punches" attitude. He also makes it clear that not every area of Japan is the same--a fact that many authors of books on Japan seem to not realize. As others have said the book is too short, but it was written many years after the author left Japan. It is a very fast and enjoyable read. I can't give it five stars because it just isn't the quality of the books written by Alan Booth (The Roads to Sata and Looking for the Lost) or The Road Through Miyama by Leila Philip, Then there is the very amusing, but not so expertly written book by Erin Neff Peters titled Memoirs of a Gaijin. I also enjoyed (after the first 90 pages) A Ride in the Neon Sun by Josie Dew who bicycled through southern Japan in the very early 1990's. Another book is devoted to her later trip through northern Japan, but I liked the earlier one better. I almost forgot At Home in Japan by Rebecca Otowa--a remarkable story.Definitely, if you are interested in an entertaining book about Japan you should get this book, No Pianos, Pets or Foreigners.
